This graduate course provides an advanced study of law enforcement in America, with a specific eye towards multicultural differences in society, which are unique to America, and how law enforcement officers could better approach situations by being more informed about various and different cultures in all communities. Topics include multicultural communities and the challenges that law enforcement faces in serving these communities, changing law enforcement strategies, multicultural recruitment, hiring, retention and promotion, cross-cultural communication, specific ethnic groups, terrorism and disaster preparedness, response strategies to crimes motivated by hate or bias, racial profiling, community policing and dealing with gangs, the homeless and also the mentally ill.
